"The John Riepenhoff Experience" presents: Emi Mizukami, Gabriel Hartley, Shizuka Okada
and "Handler" with Shigeru Hasegawa
We are pleased to announce, presented in collaboration with artist-run gallery Fig., our second solo exhibition with Milwaukee-based artist John Riepenhoff. Riepenhoff, proprietor of the exhibition space, The Green Gallery, as well as the Executive Director of Sculpture Milwaukee, a non-profit organization responsible for an annual exhibition of public sculpture in downtown Milwaukee, has taken part in exhibitions at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville.
Indicative of Riepnhoff’s earlier practice and ongoing concerns, Fig. will present a series of collaborative works in which artists Emi Mizukami, Gabriel Hartley and Shizuka Okada present small-scale paintings and sculpture within miniature galleries dubbed The John Riepenhoff Experience; Shigeru Hasegawa will present a single painting via a sculptural carrier known as a Handler; i.e. Riepnhoff’s blue-jean clad legs. MISAKO & ROSEN will exhibit the most recent iteration of Riepenhoff’s sky paintings; a series rooted in earlier paintings based upon obscured plein air observations of the night sky. Riepenhoff’s most recent paintings are the result of gathering a series of observations of the sky, over time, distilling and presenting them via an intuitive yet systematic series of patterns and colors. Titled Time-Being the exhibition suggests both the generative nature of laziness – gazing at the sky – as well as the genuine human qualities experienced when immersed in and conscious of time. On a meta-level, the exhibition also include two decoys; ceramic sculptures – a recurring owl motif as well as a newly introduced animal – a cat.
Thank you to cooperating galleries: Hagiwara Projects, Satoko Oe and 4649.
