The gallery is pleased to present Stance, our fourth solo exhibition with Yui Yaegashi. Considering the experience of looking that has developed for an attentive audience, over the course of these four shows, the exhibition takes on a meta-quality; what one expects of the exhibition is what one expects of an individual painting by Yaegashi itself; material variation – subtle and not, a familiar palette – disrupted, shifts in a small-scale, meaning suggested and withheld. Be it an almost square orange glow of underpainting or a blue transparency suggesting at once the solid and the liquid or an unexpected blue of speckled texture peeking out from behind a tan-ish grey monochrome, or a series of off-registrations, Yaegashi’s exhibitions of paintings are rewardingly intimate and engaging for those curious enough to think and look; balanced between the surprising and the familiar.
