MISAKO & ROSEN is pleased to announce “Some Painting, 1/2 Signboard and Some Vessels” a solo exhibition with Shimon Minamikawa. Minamikawa has participated in institutional exhibitions at the Kunstverein Langehagen (2020), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2109), the Museum Brandhorst, Munich and MUMOK, Vienna (2015/16), The National Art Center, Tokyo and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Gwacheon (2015) as well as the National Museum of Art, Osaka and Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (2014) and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2013).

“Some Painting, 1/2 Signboard and Some Vessels” marks a return by Minamikawa to the spectre and the introduction of afterimage. Muted in palette, minimal in mark, the new paintings and related sculptural elements together produce an affective quality previously first suggested in Minamikawa’s practice in the 2021 exhibition, “Moves”; an affect dependent upon distance and born from the gap of the in-between; both literal and psychic. Minamikawa also continues to playfully respond to the refined context of his present environs, Kyoto, with a highly controlled erasure and paint in spray – a non-calligraphic.
